Joseph Spangler, Sr.
- Born in York County, Pennsylvania in 1788.
- Married twice:
- Barbara Bentley in 1809
- Elizabeth Zorger in 1849
- Fathered 9 children
- Came to Macon County in 1834, and settled east of Decatur on the Sangamon River. This area later became known as Spangler Heights.
- Built a saw and grist mill north of what is now the William St. Bridge
- Member of the Universalist Church
- Spent his later years living in Hickory Point Township.
- Died on February 2, 1862 from a mill accident, and was buried in Spangler Cemetery.
