Joseph Spangler, Sr.

  • Born in York County, Pennsylvania in 1788.
  • Married twice:
    • Barbara Bentley in 1809
    • Elizabeth Zorger in 1849
  • Fathered 9 children
  • Came to Macon County in 1834, and settled east of Decatur on the Sangamon River. This area later became known as Spangler Heights.
  • Built a saw and grist mill north of what is now the William St. Bridge
  • Member of the Universalist Church
  • Spent his later years living in Hickory Point Township.
  • Died on February 2, 1862 from a mill accident, and was buried in Spangler Cemetery.
