Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song (1971) R

Melvin Van Peebles' incendiary Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song was a cultural landmark for African American cinema and would launch the entire blaxploitation genre in the process. The movie boasts stylish visuals and draws inspiration from all kinds of unlikely sources, while also crafting a unique vision that refuses to conform to Hollywood's standards of the era. The low budget, guerrilla approach is reflected in the rough, raw texture of the movie, but there is also immense style to be found here and a psychedelic edge that permeates the experience. When it comes to impact and influence in African American cinema, none can eclipse Sweet Sweetback and very few can even come close. The film was later changed to an R rating, but was original given an X rating for graphic sexual situations, nudity, language, and violence.
